Spanx fail.

We’ve all been there.

That moment that something goes wrong.

And what feels like the whole world is watching.

“As I stood up to collect my award (completely unexpectedly I might add), was the moment I realised my Spanx had completely rolled down.”

Shit.

A friend shared this story with me this morning (no, no names here).

She was at a client’s award evening and she had NO idea she was going to win an award.

She had done everything ‘right’ that day – no coffee, carbs or bread to bloat out the ol’ belly so she could fit into that LBD, complete with Spanx and heels.

Ready for the glamour, the schmoozing, some fun.

Then the meal comes.

The bread, the cheese, the cake…

Things… slipped.

And the inevitable sensation of the roll-down of the Spanx began (audible sigh).

Just at the time she heard her website wording and her name being read out.

All eyes now on her to strategically ‘hoick’ and wriggle to be stage-ready.

No, this isn’t a feminist commentary about aesthteics and societal pressures to wear Spanx.

They are magic.

We love them.

This is a commentary about letting things go…. But getting caught.

You see, when I heard this (and after I stopped laughing), I reflected on the constant need to be on show in our business, to keep on top of the brand (yes, Logo Cop hat on) and to be prepared for success.

Yes, it’s tiring, yes it’s relentless and yes it takes a lot of energy.

BUT – being persistent and consistent is what building a brand is all about.

Always on.

Always ready.

When we let things slip is when we enter the danger zone….

Think – ‘that’ll do’ with a layout; ‘it’s fine’ with an image; ‘it’s all I had time to do’ with a post…

We can not afford to do this in our businesses.

The result? >> Slap-dashed, amateur design; poor quality visuals that don’t do your work justice; ill-thoughtout writing that fails to connect with your audience or leaves them confused.

**Crickets.**

It deserves better.

You deserve better.

So, we must always be ready with our brand – on message, on point visuals, on the nose management so we can build trust, recognition and regard with our audience and peers.

>> a concise boiler plate and set of language points the whole team can draw on time and time again,
